WELCOME - BIENVENU - FÀILTE
welcome to the eastern most part of ontario,
to the beautiful county of glengarry
and the see of first catholic bishop of upper canada
Glengarry was founded in 1784 by Scottish loyalists, mainly from Clan Donald, and other Highland Scottish emigrants from the Mohawk Valley in New York.

On September 7, 1786 a second group immigrated to this district, some 500 Scots who arrived at Quebec on the Ship McDonald. This shipload of immigrants consisted of nearly an entire parish from the north of Scotland, who immigrated with their Priest, the Reverend Alexander Macdonell.

Throughout the late 18th and the 19th century, other Highland emigrants settled into the community as a means of preserving their Scottish Highland Culture.

The county was named after the Scottish Glen, where the MacDonell family was based.
